Tradition

The Slovenian tradition of making brandy goes back to the 19th century. Our ancestors have left behind a rich legacy of instructions on selecting the most appropriate fruits, sorting them, processing them, distilling them and ultimately aging the brandy in order to give it an authentic flavour.

The Forties

One of the first people in Slovenia to go into the brandy-making business was an enterprising man from Mirna in the Dolenjska region (Lower Carniola). Soon after World War II, he started producing and selling homemade brandy made from apples, pears, plums, juniper berries and figs.

The Fifties

Because the business was going very well, a decision was issued in 1952, by the people’s committee of Mirna to establish a work organization. Their initial products fruit brandy, plum brandy, rum and gin were followed by liqueurs made from absinthe, menthol and pear, as well as raspberry and currant fruit syrup.

The Sixties

In this period, Dana, a fruit and vegetable factory, was especially successful with the bitter mineral water products Hermelika, Kralj Samo and Gorjan. We also started selling our first refreshing non-alcohol beverages. In 1967, we launched a refreshing carbonated drink Frutella. It had a distinctive orange taste that helped make it really popular with kids and young people.

The Seventies

In 1972, we entered the market of intermediate goods and raw materials in the beverage industry. We exported our own fruit juices, concentrates, distillates, colorants and flavourings all over ex-Yugoslavia. Another product that sold very well was Zlati sok, nectar made from homegrown berries and beetroot; it was sold in bottles and the famous doypack. One of Dana’s popular alcohol beverages in the seventies was Cynar.

The Eighties

Emulsion liqueurs, such as Scotch cream, Coco Brasil and Čokolada (chocolate); fruit liqueurs Kivi, Chery and Marakuja and also the Jack&Jill whiskey, became very popular in the eighties. These drinks became indispensable when it came to hosting parties, and found their way onto every appetizer tray.

The Nineties

We were the ones to introduce Ledeni čaj (Ice Tea), a carbonated drink River and a non-carbonated drink called   Multi Dan to the market. As the technology progressed, we introduced the so-called hot-fill into a laminated packaging – Variopak with an aseptic filling line. Later, we also started using the cold fill process with Dan nectar, which was filled into a combibloc packaging.

The Third Millennium

Our market efforts, in the beginning of the third millennium, have been directed into accommodating the modern consumer who is interested in nature and leading a healthy life. With the help of the new filling line for filling into a PET packaging and filling Dana water, by adhering to the strictest quality criteria and knowing our customers, we have become a modern factory that is producing the finest bottled water, juice and brandy, because of favourable natural conditions in combination with the modern processes.
